For equilateral-equiangular- and equliateral-unequiangular indexable inserts, the dimension of the side lenght in mm is given as characteristic number. Figures behind the decimal point are not taken into account, e.g. for the side lenght  I=16.5mm. (characteristic number 16)

Round indexable inserts

For round indexable inserts the diameter in mm is given as the characteristic number.
Unequilateral indexable inserts

Unequilateral-equiangular and unequilateral-unequiangular inserts, the main cutting edge i.e. the longer cutting edge, is always given as characteristic number. With these inserts the fourth symbol is always an
' x '.
